The Transformation of Transceivers
With newer editions of Ethernet standards being created, the newer transceivers had to follow. Gigabit Ethernet networks depended on Gigabit Ethernet converters to supply copper and fiber optic wiring ports to convey signals across networks.
Gigabit Ethernet converters became replaced with a newer, lighter transceiver known as SFP modules or small form-factor pluggable modules. Gigabit Ethernet converters were not capable of supporting all three communication standards–SONET, Gigabit Ethernet and Fibre Channel—while SFP transceivers did provide support.
SFP transceivers also had the advantage of providing for the different modes of communication like single and multi-mode fiber configurations. In multi-mode fiber configurations, the SFP transceiver can transfer multiple signals across a fiber optic, while in a single-mode setup, only one signal can be sent across. Each fiber optic configuration is employed by Ethernet networks. However, each configuration serves a distinct motive with single-mode optical fibers used for long distance and multi-mode used for short distances.
