Applications

An Ethernet to Fiber Media Converter can also be used where there is high level of electromagnetic interference or EMI which is a common phenomenon found in industrial plants. This interference can cause corruption of data over copper-based ethernet links. Data transmitted over fiber optic cable however is completely immune to this type of noise. An Ethernet to Fiber Optic Converter therefore enables you to inter-connect your copper-ethernet devices over fiber ensuring optimal data transmission across the plant floor.

RS232 to Fiber Converter and Gigabit Fiber Media Converter Introduction

In telecommunications, RS-232 is the traditional name for a series of standards for serial binary single-ended data and control signals connecting between a DTE (Data Terminal Equipment) and a DCE (Data Circuit-terminating Equipment). It is commonly used in computer serial ports. The standard defines the electrical characteristics and timing of signals, the meaning of signals, and the physical size and pinout of connectors.

The current version of the standard is TIA-232-F Interface between Data Terminal Equipment and Data Circuit-Terminating Equipment Employing Serial Binary Data Interchange, issued in 1997. An RS-232 port was once a standard feature of a personal computer for connections to modems, printers, mice, data storage, uninterruptible power supplies, and other peripheral devices.

However, the low transmission speed, large voltage swing, and large standard connectors motivated development of the universal serial bus, which has displaced RS-232 from most of its peripheral interface roles. Many modern personal computers have no RS-232 ports and must use an external converter to connect to older peripherals. RS-232 devices are still found, especially in industrial machines or scientific instruments.

Fiber optic transmission offers the benefits of wide bandwidth, immunity to EMI/RFI interference, and secured data transmission. The fiber-optic converter is used as an RS-232/422/485 point-to-point or point-to-multipoint connection for transmitting and converting full/half-duplex signals and their equivalents within a fiber optics environment. Fiber optics is the perfect solution for applications where the transmission medium must be protected from electrical exposure, lightning, atmospheric conditions or chemical corrosion.

RS-232 to Fiber Converter integrates serial and multi-mode/single mode fiber networks in one flexible package. The Industrial Series (RS-232 to Fiber) Converter provides a reliable and economical solution for your industrial Ethernet environment. It offers seamless integration while working as transparent device between your serial devices and industrial Ethernet. The Converter has operating temperature range from 0 to 50°C. Fiber enables you to extend the distances up to 120km.

However, gigabit fiber optic media converter is a kind of 10/100/1000Mbps intelligent adaptive fast Ethernet media converter. It can extent the transmission distance of a network from 1000m over copper wires to 120km in which there is no help of any other converter. And it can implement data transmission between twisted pair electrical signals and optical signals which are the two types of network connection media.

It can create a simple, cost-effective Gigabit Ethernet-fiber link – transparently converting to/from 1000Base-T Ethernet, and 1000Base-SX optical signals to extend an Ethernet network connection over LC terminated multimode fiber at distances up to 550 meters (0.3 miles). It is easy to set up and install in a matter of seconds, this compact fiber media converter can be wall-mounted for out-of-the-way installations. The durable all steel chassis and heavy-duty power supply can withstand challenging industrial environments, and 6 integrated LED indicators make monitoring the Ethernet/fiber link easy.
