Patch Cords vs. Cross-Over Cables

The order of the wires inside an Ethernet cable is very important. Most cables, known as patch cords, have the wires running parallel from one end to the other. These are sometimes called parallel or straight cables. Patch cords are designed to connect computers to network devices like switches and routers.

If you need to connect two computers together, you can't use a patch cable, unless one of the computer's network adapters contains built-in cross-over support -- for example Gigabit Ethernet adaptors and Mac computers made after 2000 have built-in cross-over support through Auto-Medium Dependent Interface Crossover technology.

With other devices, you may need a cross-over cable, which reverses the order of some of the wires inside on one end compared to the other. Using a patch cord to connect two computers means they will both be trying to transmit on the same wire.
