Applications

An Ethernet to Fiber Media Converter can also be used where there is high level of electromagnetic interference or EMI which is a common phenomenon found in industrial plants. This interference can cause corruption of data over copper-based ethernet links. Data transmitted over fiber optic cable however is completely immune to this type of noise. An Ethernet to Fiber Optic Converter therefore enables you to inter-connect your copper-ethernet devices over fiber ensuring optimal data transmission across the plant floor.

10 Things to Determine before Purchasing a Media Converter

Media Converters: single-mode, multi-mode, fiber to Ethernet, fiber to fiber, SC connectors, LC connectors,  single-strand fiber, receive, transmit, etc. Kinda makes your mind extra jumbled right?

Seriously though, choosing the right media converter for your application can be tricky (just look at all that jargon above!) and making sure you get the right one is our top priority. So before purchase, take a look at our top ten of things to determine.

  1. What type of fiber do you have installed?

If you have multi-mode fiber installed, keep in mind that there are limitations to this type of fiber. The max distance for 100 Mbps is 2km and the max distance for 1000 Mbps is 550 m.

  1. What type of connectors do you need?

(SC, ST, or LC) There can be some flexibility involved for the media converter if the installation has patch panels. For example, if you have SC patch panels, you can still use LC connectors in the media converter by using an SC to LC patch cable.

  1. What type of fiber speed do you want/need?

You can’t negotiate speed like you can on copper, so you need to match the speed of the converters on both ends. If you need both speeds, dual rate media converters can take in either a 100 Mbps or 1000 Mbps SFP.

  1. What type of mounting do you need?

If you have a lot of media converters coming into a central location, you might want to use a 19″ rack that the media converters can slide into.

  1. What is the application environment like?

If it is a harsh environment, you might want to consider industrial grade media converters.

  1. What type of available power do you have?

Do you have 110VAC or 12VDC or 24/48VDC?

  1. If you have single-mode fiber, what distance do you need for your application?

The standard distance for 100Mbps is 30km and for 1000Mbps is 10km. However, options out to 120km are available with SFP additions.

  1. How many available fiber strands do you have?

The typical media converter will require two strands of fiber – one for transmit, and one for receive. However, single strand converters for both multi-mode and single-mode fiber can double the capacity of an existing fiber infrastructure.

  1. Do you need management?

If this is a critical application where you need to be immediately notified if there is a link failure, you might want to consider a managed media converter.

  1. Do you need power over Ethernet (PoE)?

Is the device that will be connected to the media converter a PoE device and need power from the copper port?
