Fiber Couplers Reference Guide
A fiber coupler is an optical fiber device with one or more input fiber strands and two or more output fiber strands.
Fibers can be thermally tapered and fused so that their cores come into intimate contact.
Coupler can come in ceramic or metal sleeves, ceramic sleeves are normally recommended for higher temperatures.
Fiber couplers are usually directional couplers, with no optical power sent into some input port can go back into one of the input ports.
A specification of return loss is often included, explaining how much weaker the reflected light is in comparison with the original input.
Fiber optic adapters are usually directional couplers, which mean that substantially no optical power sent into some input port can go back into one of the input ports. There is often a specification of return loss, which indicates how much weaker the back-reflected light is, compared with the input.
Types of Couplers
They are available in SC, ST LC, MTRJ as well as simplex and duplex, which provide reliable solution for fiber connections, single mode fiber optic adaptors and multimode fiber optic adaptors available on request.
Coupling Loss
Most couplers cause a slight loss of signal due to fiber separation or angular misalignment. Other causes for coupling loss include:
- Reflection losses
- Poor fiber end preparation
- Lateral misalignment
