What are the Disadvantages of Optical Fiber as a Transmission Medium?
The fiber optics has its advantages and disadvantages. Though there are more advantages than disadvantages, they still are there. One of the largest disadvantages is the overall price of manufacturing and installation of the fiber optic system.
Not only is a large amount of glass wire needed for one of these systems, but expensive transmitters and receivers are needed to move the data it carries. Setting up the wires and splicing them also comes at a large expense and also with a great degree of difficulty.
Outdoor Direct Buried Double Sheath Armored Optical Cable
Fiber Optics will lead a high cost of physical medium and compatible devices. Cost of training workers to install optical cable safely (physical hazards associated with glass fibres).
Cost of laying cables under roads or other infrastructure to a destination building (not an issue if installation is in a building with existing cabled infrastructure of if the installing part has access both physically and legally to existing cable runs IE phone company's).
Disadvantages are almost all installation based, once installed fibre connections are superior to traditional copper cables due to immunity from electromagnetic interference and much higher available bandwidth.
