Fiber Optics for Satellite Communication
Over the last several years, fiber optics has become increasingly popular in space environments as a medium of choice for a variety of applications. Fiber offers some distinct advantages over other mediums including:
l Immunity to EMI and RFI
l Low attenuation of light power over long distances
l Wide transmission bandwidth (~10 – 100Gbps)
l Small physical size and weight
l Electrical insulation from chemical corrosion
l Analog and digital transmission
We need Optical Communications inside the Satellite because the intra-satellite communication requirements can reach several Tbps.
Also because of the EMI, low mass, low volume and mechanical flexibility characteristics of fibers that are important in for a Spacecraft.

We need free-space laser links between satellites because the higher directivity of the optical beam allows higher data/power efficiency (more Mbps for each Watt of power).
This is critical to power-limited systems like a S/C. However it has higher Pointing Acquisition and Tracking requirements.
