Do You Need Attenuators for Your Fiber Cables?
If you are experiencing difficulties performing network tests over short distances via fiber optic cables, then you might benefit from using fiber attenuators in your testing environment.
Fiber cables transmit light instead of electrical signals. When transmitting light over a very short distance, the receiving end can be completely overpowered - too much light can overload the receiver and affect the bit error ratio. If this is the case the light output should be reduced to obtain an optimal bit error ratio.
You can use an attenuator in this scenario of short fiber runs to simulate loss that would be caused by a longer length fiber cable - reducing the transmission of light by using a solution doping technique.
Think of attenuators like a pair of sunglasses - they are used to reduce light into manageable quantities. We recommend that if you are using short length fiber cables in your testing environment to consider using fiber attenuators for more reliable results. There are many different types of attenuators that can provide different levels of DB loss.
