What Can Go Into PCI Expansion Slots?
PCI (Peripheral Component Interconnect) expansion slots are located on the motherboard inside the computer's case. You can add functionality to your computer by purchasing PCI expansion cards for things like audio, storage devices, and additional cable connections.
The PCI platform was designed by Intel and became popular in the mid-1990s. It was originally designed for video cards, sound cards, and dial-up modems.
PCI-X expansion slots are used mostly for servers. Common uses are for fiber optics, gigabit Ethernet, and storage device controller cards, particularly SCSI (Small Computer System Interface). PCI 2.0 cards are compatible with PCI-X slots.
PCI Express (PCIe) is used mostly for video cards, and you may see multiple PCIe slots on a motherboard, designed for using video cards in tandem for higher performance. PCI cards are not compatible with PCIe slots.
10Gigabit Ethernet Server Adapters
PCI Express is also used to provide additional external ports for FireWire, USB (Universal Serial Bus, external SATA (Serial Advanced Technology Attachment, for storage devices), and Ethernet.
Mini PCI is a slot type mostly seen in laptops. It is a popular choice for wireless Internet adapters, Bluetooth, and dial-up modems.
