How to Connect a PCI Card to a PCI Express 1X?

PCI cards have replaced older AGP cards for higher video performance. There are also PCI cards available to allow you to watch TV or enable other devices such as wireless access. PCI-X has been replaced in modern designs by the PCI Express.

Please follow these five steps to connect a PCI card to a PCI Express 1x:

  1. Turn off your computer, unplug it and open the case according to manufacturer's instructions. You may need a screwdriver to unscrew any fasteners. Make sure the power has been off for a few minutes before you open the case. Release static electricity from the computer by touching bare unpainted metal or wearing an electrostatic bracelet.

  1. Identify the PCI Express 1x slot. It is a plastic receptor that has bridges that only allow you to plug in a PCI card. It will be positioned so the metal endplate of the PCI card will be positioned flush with the back of your computer.

  1. Remove the back plate adjacent to the PCI slot so the card's metal mounting bracket can be accessed at the back of the computer. You may have to remove one or two screws to remove the back plate.

  1. Remove the PCI card from the anti-static wrapper. Try to not touch the circuitry on the PCI card. Handle the card by the edges. Position the card over the slot to confirm the card matches the slot.

  1. Press the card firmly into the PCI slot. The card's mounting bracket should be flush with the opening at the back of the computer. The bottom edge of the card should be parallel to the motherboard. Screw the mounting bracket into the back of the computer case and replace the computer cover. Plug the computer in and turn it on. Follow the manufacturer's instructions for installing drivers and enabling your PCI card functions.
