How to Add a PCI Slot

Peripheral Component Interconnect (PCI) slots in a desktop computer allow the motherboard to be connected to another device or driver, such as a network card, sound card or television tuner. Motherboards are generally limited to the number of PCI slots that come on it when it's made, but there are two options for adding more PCI slots.

One of these is to carefully solder a new PCI slot, provided the card has the room and pins for it. This is extremely difficult to do and may destroy your motherboard. The other method, however, simply requires purchasing a riser, provided the interior of the computer has enough room.

Now, let me intro how to add a PCI Slot through 3 steps.

  1. Turn off your computer, and unplug everything attached to it to avoid the danger of electrical shock.

  1. Open the computer to determine if there is enough room for a riser. Look at how things may be rearranged to make room for extra slots.

  1. Plug the single end of the PCI riser into one of the motherboard's PCI slots. One slot of the motherboard will be taken, with the two on the riser open for operation.
