What Is the SDH Network?

Digital devices that transmit data require a reliable network to deliver information from one point to another. The network used to deliver this data must have enough flexibility to handle the data capacity while ensuring the security of the transmitted data. Synchronous digital hierarchy is a secure networking technology that has started to replace the plesiochronous digital hierarchy standard. SDH networks also offer improved handling of large amounts of digital data.

The Telecommunication Standardization Sector of the International Telecommunications Union standardized the SDH technological standard in 1988. ITU-T also helped to standardize the technology that supports the digital transmission of data through optical fibers and to make this technology cost effective and efficient in performance. The SDH technology allows the transportation of digital signals over optical and electrical networks in different capacities. This system permits a more flexible and trouble free network infrastructure compared to the PDH standard.

The need for SDH networks resulted from several weaknesses and disadvantages of the PDH standard. First, PDH technology did not have a worldwide standard for optical interfaces making it impossible for standardized networking to exist on a global level. Additionally, PDH has a rigid structure with limited management capabilities for the users of the network. This inflexibility and a lack of a global standard let to the creation and implementation of the SDH technology.

One of the most beneficial aspects of SDH is that this type of network utilizes a world standard digital format for optical interfaces, which lowers the cost of networking. Additionally, SDH provides effective management capabilities with backward and forward compatibilities. This flexibility simplifies traffic, add-and-drop and cross connection capabilities, making this technology more cost effective than PDH. SDH also uses synchronous transport modules with rates ranging from 155 megabits per second to 10 Gb per second.

SDH has several different applications. SDH can increase the capacity of a network by increasing the data transmission level. Additionally, a SDH network can reduce the cost of operations, improve reliability for users and provide flexibility and adaptability without significant down time. The management capabilities of SDH networks also include performance, configuration, security, and event and alarm management.
