What Is PDH Transmission?

A telecommunications network refers to a combination of links and terminals that connect in order to provide telecommunication functions between terminal users. PDH, or Plesiochronous Digital Hierarchy, technology is utilized in telecommunications networks to transmit large amounts of data over transportation equipment.

PDH Function

PDH technology enables telecommunications networks to operate at a level where different parts of the network are almost completely synchronized. PDH enables transmissions of data streams that run at nominally the same rate but allows for some speed variation.

Data Streams

The basic data stream data transfer rate is equal to 2,048 kbit/s (kilobits per second.) A kilobit is equivalent to 1,000 bits, or smallest units of data, per second. A clock controls the data rate, which is allowed to vary slightly, and causes the data streams to run at slightly different rates.

Multiplexer

A transmitting multiplexer adds bits to the data stream, a process called justification, to enable a receiving multiplexer to decode and reconstitute the original data streams. The transmitting multiplexer, while combining data streams, will often search for the next bit needed to perform the combinations. The multiplexer then sends a signal to the receiving multiplexer. The receiving multiplexer then reconstructs the bits needed for the data streams at the correct plesiochronous rates.
