Traffic management and Scalable Bandwidth in FTTx and HFC Networks

In order to ensure that services will be provided in a carrier class manner, the bandwidth and traffic management should be considered. Service providers proposals should be carefully analyzed, especially a quality of management and ability to manage multiple service provider’s services at the same time. It is necessary to ensure, that on vendors services will not override another vendors services.

Ethernet is having ability to identify different types of traffic, but unfortunately, it could not manage bandwidth. However, standardized MPLS implementation applied to the Ethernet could provide reliable and managed connectivity, while leaving service providers management techniques intact. The characteristics of the entire pertinent network - availability, bandwidth, packet loss, latency, and jitter - can be aggregated for the Ethernet through the MPLS core networks.

While there is no big difference in the management between the ATM, SONET, and Ethernet solutions, it has been primary goal to provide high, scalable bandwidth.

The Principle of High Scalable bandwidth is dictating the requirement of symmetrical transmission. By symmetrical it is meant the rate of download/upload to be close to 1. HFC network is offering alternative logic provided by cable TV companies. In process of designing, it has been considered that download/upload ratio would be in a range of 17-19. It has been assumed based on the cable TV companies pure broadcasting experience and on the idea of customers, who would be satisfied with downloading content only, not creating and distributing it. After the HFC has been deployed, statistics shows that ratio is closer to 3 to 1 than 17 to 1.

In modern world, Internet is a tool for many people to socialize, interact and share content. But people are limited by the bandwidth, which creates some level of frustration. In order to provide growing need of sharing content, it is critical to build a network with high, scalable bandwidth with symmetrical high-speed transmission.
