Gigabit FTTH Trend
The Gigabit FTTH trend is gaining significant attention, thanks in large part to Google and their Google Fiber initiative. Since Google launched its own fiber-to-the-home initiative, promising to build open-access fiber networks in trial communities and then share what it learns with others, there are over 40 municipal broadband Gigabit fiber networks deployed today, according to the Community Broadband Networks website.
Gigabit FTTH delivers 1,000 Mbps down-stream, or approximately 135 times faster than the average U.S. broadband connection of 7.4 Mbps (according to Akamai, as of 1Q13). Is it just broadband hype, or is there more to this Gigabit momentum?
We’ll explore this growing broadband trend, discuss the market for Gigabit FTTH and the technologies that are enabling it, as well as outline a Gigabit FTTH evaluation process.
