What is meant by protection in SDH Technology?

The SDH technology is used in high speed data transmission from one point to another point. Depending upon the criticality of the data we are defining protection technique to avoid loss of data packet.

Type of Protection Technique:
•    HARDWARE PROTECTION
•    PATH PROTECTION

Hardware Protection:
In hardware protection technique is used to avoid data lost due to hardware failure of transmission equipment.

We can divide SDH equipment in five sections.

•    Tributary: To provide bandwidth to end user.
•    Aggregate: To transmit/receive STM frame from one point to other
•    Controller and communication: Responsible for NE communication and controlling.
•    Cross connect: Responsible for mapping of tributary signal
•    Power supply: To provide power supply to transmission equipment.

There are two type of hardware protection technique used in India are mention below:

A.    1+1: One unit is active and one dedicated standby unit is equipped in transmission equipment for redundancy purpose.

B.    1+N: There are N number of cards are active (assumption all cards are in the same section) in transmission equipment and one dedicated standby unit is equipped for redundancy of N number of cards.

1+1 and 1+N protection technique are known as Multiplex Section Protection (MSP).

Path Protection Technique:
When transmission equipment is working in ring, mesh topology then we can implement path protection technique.
There are mainly two types of path protection technique.

•    SNCP (Sub network connection protection)
•    MSSP (Multiplexed section shared protection)

A.       SNCP:

In SNCP protection technique we are define one working path and other is protection path in case of link failure the traffic we will switch over the protection path. SNCP protection switching technique is explained in the diagram.
SNCP protection switching is based on alarm generations. It is most popular protection technique used in India.

B.    MSSP:

MSSP protection technique can be used in STM-4 or higher STM bit rate (STM-16, STM-64).

In MSSP 50% VC-4’s are reserved for working path and 50% VC-4’s are reserved for protection path.

In case of link failure whole traffic of VC-4’s are automatic switchovers to protection path. The same has explained in the diagram.

Conclusion:
SNCP and MSSP are most common and popular protection technique in SDH technology. According to the criticality of data, protection technique will be implemented in the network to avoid data loss.
