Fiber to the Home Uses Ring or Direct Gigabit Ethernet
The ideal way to deliver Fiber to the Home (FTTH) services is with open standards-based Gigabit Ethernet. Now that all Video, Data and Voice services can be delivered using packet networks, the need for speed at the home has passed 25Mbps, approaching 100Mbps, with 1Gbps in the future. Bandwidth intensive content such as High Definition TV, interactive gaming and peer-to-peer applications will consume a majority of the bandwidth. It is imperative that this “need for speed” is recognized and planned into any FTTH technology choice and network deployment configuration.
Gigabit Ethernet FTTH configurations use the least amount of electronics and Outside Plant equipment and are the most cost effective to deploy and operate. There are two FTTH Gigabit Ethernet configurations that can be used depending on the needs of the network operator.
The most efficient is the FTTH Gigabit Ethernet Ring (E-Ring) as shown in the following diagram:
The FTTH E-Ring has many advantages over other FTTH PON architectures such as BPON/GPON:
• No FTTH Optical Line Terminal in the Central Office
• No Video overlay WDMs in the Central Office
• No large Outside Plant Fiber Connectivity Cabinets
• No Passive Optical Network Splitters
• No PON Administration in the Field
• No Stranded Capital
• No Stranded Fiber
The second type of FTTH Gigabit Ethernet deployment is a Point to Point Ethernet network. This is shown in the following diagram:
A point to point Ethernet FTTH deployment of IP-based Triple Play services is advantageous in some deployments such as new Master Planned Communities.
