What’s the difference between SFP+ and XFP?

Ø  Difference in definition

SFP+ is the enhanced version of SFP and can be applied in 8.5 G Fiber Channel and 10G-Ethernet.

XFP10 Gigabit Small Form Factor Pluggable is an optical transceiver featuring hot-pluggable, independent of communication agreements. And it can be used in applications such as SONET/SDH of 10G bpsFiber ChannelGigabit Ethernet10 G Ethernet.

Ø   Difference in appearance

SFP+ is smaller than XFP in dimensions, as shown:

 XFP

Ø  Difference in data rate

SFP+ and XFP are all optical fiber modules of 10G, and can connect with other types of 10G.

Ø  Difference in agreement

XFP is in accordance with XFP MSA while SFP+ is in accordance with IEEE 802.3aeSFF-8431SFF-8432.

Ø  Designs and advantages:

 Designs

SFP+ possesses the mainstream design. SFP+ transmits its modulation function, serial/deserializer, MAC, Time clock and CDR, and EDC into its main-board.

 SFP+ Advantages

SFP+ possesses more tight dimensions than X2 and XFP;

SFP+ can connect with XFP, X2, XENPAK directly;

SFP+ costs less than XFP, X2, XENPAK.

SFP+ is characterized by high density, low consumption and lower systemic-structure expenditure. So SFP+ has been widely used in 10G-Ethernet fiber data communication field as a mainstream product.
