The Characteristics of WDM


A WDM system uses a multiplexer at the transmitter to join the signals together, and a demultiplexer at the receiver to split them apart. The following are some characteristics of WDM:

 

1.    Making full use of the advantage of optical fibers with its low power consumption; strengthening its transmission volume; making its physics limit of information transmission increase 1 or several times.

 

2.    In a single optical fiber, it can transmit two or several nonparallel signal, conducive to the compatibility between digital signal and analog signal.

 

3.    High flexibility and scalability

 

4.    The reduced amount of optical fibers cuts the cost heavily.

 

5.    The reduced amount of active equipment in system enhances its credibility.
