What is the PON technology?

PON (Passive Optical Network). PON (passive optical network) means network (the optical wiring network) which contains no electronic devices and electronic power supply , ODN all composed by the optical splitter and other passive components,do not require valuable active electronic devices. A passive optical network includes one optical line terminal (OLT) attached to the central control station, a number of supporting optical network units (ONUs) installed in the customer premises. The optical distribution network (ODN) between the OLT and the ONU includes optical fiber and passive optical splitters or couplers.

Prominent advantage of PON networks is that it eliminates the outdoor active devices, all the signal processing functions are completed in the switch and the user premises equipment. Moreover, upfront investment is little and most of the funds will be postponed until the user really accesses. Its transmission distance is shorter than the active optical access system and coverage is smaller, but it is low cost, no need to set the engine room, and easy to maintain. This structure can be economic services for the home user.
PON complexity lies in the signal processing techniques.Signal issued by the switch is broadcasted to all users in the downstream direction. In the upstream direction, the ONU must be some kind of multi-access protocol such as TDMA (Time Division Mutiple Access) protocol can it complete the information visiting of shared transmission channel.in order to.
